Pre-curving handrails by taping thin styrene strip around off cuts of plastic pipe. An hour in a warm oven does the job.

Plastruct caged ladders run up the side of one of the tall tanks and the two tank tops are linked with a short footbridge. Storage tanks often feature a stairway that follows the curve of the side. To model this type of stairway, simply remove one side of a set of Plastruct steps with a craft knife. Starting at the bottom of the tank, fix the inner edge of the stair, just a few millimetres of it, to the tank with plumber’s solvent. I also liberally brush on some modeller’s solvent to help the bond.

Leave that to fully cure overnight. When firmly fixed, start to curve the stair up and around the tank. Check that the steps splay out evenly and that the stair climbs at a constant gradient whilst fixing the stair to the tank with plumber’s solvent. Masking tape carefully bound around steps and tank will hold it firm until the solvent has set. Leave overnight to be certain that the solvent bond has fully dried. The stairs are completed by adding an outer riser of 30 x 80 thou styrene strip. This method of installing a spiral stairway works down to tanks of 50mm diameter, I have not tried anything smaller, but it does become more difficult as the diameter reduces. The stairway on the wider tank includes a halfway landing.

With the stairway and its outer riser firmly fixed, handrails were built up with the usual styrene sections. The pre-curved styrene strip was used to make up the handrails.
